Blog 1 post
This is my first blog post and I would like to just tell a little about myself. I grew up in Monterey Ca loving the ocean and surfing. I went on an LDS mission in Arkansas and Tennessee. I love being adventurous and have finally narrowed my favorite interests to just a few: Triathlons, backpacking, skiing, and the ocean.
I am pursuing the educational goal of teaching Health and PE. I hope to teach for 3 years and then go back to school to receive my masters in teaching administration and become a principle. I love Health and PE so I will define them as the art of living healthy. I really am excited to teach others about my passion of health.
Literacy does relate to my field. My definition of literacy is the art of understanding the meaning behind the words. This applies to my field because of the different meaning of Healthy living. There are a lot of people who say they are healthy but they have a very unbalanced life. It is all about equally balancing all the different dimensions of health.
My guess is that very few people who live in Utah know how to surf--that's great you have such a diverse and unique skill set!
ReplyDeleteI have heard that one of the most popular uses of the Internet among teens is to look up health information--info about acne, about STDs, about illnesses that they or their family members might have, and so forth. I think it's great that they will have a teacher like you who can help them sift through all of that information to make an informed decision. I think being "literate" in health is so important because there really is nothing more important than finding and using good information to help us make decisions that will benefit our bodies and minds.
It wasn't until I was long out of high school that I learned about "the different dimensions of health," as you put it. I wish that my health and P.E. classes would have involved more literacy-based activities. Every day in class was just running: run for 25 minutes, run for 2 miles, run until your feet bleed ... okay, maybe not that bad, but there was a LOT of running. I didn't understand all the benefits of running. I would have loved to have been given some vocabulary and some comprehension of the processes our bodies utilize while running, ways to be a better runner, or how to make more healthy decisions in general. I am glad to know that you will be able to help your future students to understand some of these ideas.
